Maintenance & repairs: Roof on the western side has been recently replaced with tin, east side still needs to be done. Tin needs to be covered, or disguised. North and side walls need to be filled in with slats available on site. Bar needs to be re-installed, seperating the short section in the north-east from the rest of the tavern.

Current status

Relax at the end of the day of hard combat or crafting at the real centre of any medieval village. Our tavern has benches and tables all in a cozy well lit atmosphere.

Maintenance & repairs: Roof has been recently been damaged by a falling branch. Repair plan is to strip the damaged half down, replace the tough plastic water proof layer with thick rubber sheet, then cover with brushwood fencing. New stained glass installed and old stained glass V window to be repaired (see photo). Walls need to be dark stained and oiled. Raised sod bank on south side of the chapel needs to be levelled out back toward the wall.

Current status

A quiet space to reflect. Here we can host a recreation of a medieval religous service. Doubles as a base for the Hospitaller and Templar re-enactors in the club. It has been used for both Christian and psuedo pagan ceremonies. It is also a good place to offer hand craft workshops.

Maintenance & repairs: Roof tin in incomplete, 2 more sections required on the southern side. Tin is available, see Aaron. Side walls need to be cpmpleted with slats available. Hooks need to be made and installed, outside for hanging club shields, inside for hanging club tools. Need to replace the temporary benches with solid ones suitable for working on.

Current status

A village needs a place to repair or build things. The hut is equiped with a central forge base and has a double bellows and a range of primitive hand tools. Vanguard also has a gas forge available on request for members.

Current status

Entrance by foot over the bridge and through the palisade gate into the hamlet. The bridge is the short route from some campsites into the hamlet. It is also commonly used for a combat chokepoint scenerio.

Cooking Firepit

Current status

Raised firepit for cooking with undercover weather resistant cover. It is not from any set period. Vanguard have different cooking rigs for different requirements. An ideal place to prepare traditional period meals in front of your guests.

Campsites

Can be used: Yes
Intended regular use: Camping and car parking.

Maintenance & repairs: Remove large sticks and branches from level areas when they are found.

Longhall - Under construction

Current status

Saxon style longhall based on the reconstruction of the royal Saxon site in Cheddar.

Roman day camp

Can be used: Yes, with a tarp roof.
Intended regular use: Small gatherings with flat tent space and private communal area on 3 sides.

Current status

Grendel's nest

Current status

Medieval spring wouldn't be complete without a Maypole (in the southern hemisphere, October would be the equivilent.) We need a pole holder, 90mm diameter steel pipe concreted 400mm into the ground, We need a wooden pole, 5~6m long with a base that is <90mm diameter. As well as a ribbon loop and cap.

Bobby's hut - Maybe???

Intended regular use: Not sure.

Current status

The pilory needs to be rebuilt as it has been eaten by white ants. The gibbet hangs from the Goatshead to remind all to obey the laws of the land.

Archery range - YUK

Can be used: Sort of but is a mess

Current status

The site has turned into what looks like a dump, and based on the arrows stuck in trees behind the site, the catch cloth is no longer working. We will clear up the site, perhaps keep one catch cloth behind an appropriate target and get some target animals as seen in the images below.

Celtic Round house

Can be used: Not currently
Intended regular use: Wet weather training.

Maintenance & repairs: A couple of poles and at least 1 roof beam needs replacing. Walls (half height) need to be closed in with a test of mud brick and wattle and daub techniques.

Current status

A sunken roundhouse seems to be a common design in Brittish pre-history. It is a good broad design the does not need internal poles making it suitable as a training room for Vanguard.

Well

Can be used: No, as we cannot be sure of contaminents.
Intended regular use: Water for cleaning and projects, not potable.

Current status

A village needs a fresh water supply. A source of water is valuable and thefore needs to be protected. It will be placed inside the fort where the water table is high..

Current status

Worked well for years but is now a monument only. One day we will rebuild. This was not the first engine and is not the last. Perhaps we will build another people powered traction catapult.

Kitchen facility

Current status

The state of the kitchen/washing facility is appaling and being at the entrance of the hamlet reflects poorly on Vanguard. At the moment we cannot even get to a sink or a clean granite bench if we wanted to.

Can be used: No until the mess is removed or sorted.
Intended regular use: Hygenic cooking and cleaning.
